Immersive VR Tank with Physical Levers and Motion Chair

Summary
Created between December 4 2023 and January 14 2024. A VR tank experience using custom control levers and a motion platform. I built the 3D tank, implemented the gameplay logic for the tank, connected sounds in MetaSounds, and helped modify the chair for full-body motion. One teammate built the physical controls and created the audio. The other created the environment, motion sync, and enemy AI.

Program: Design of Digital and Immersive Experiences
Course: Interfaces with Immersive Technologies
Assignment: Explore interfaces for immersive tech using digital and physical elements
Project duration: December 4 2023 to January 14 2024
Project brief
The assignment was to explore interface design in immersive technologies by combining physical and digital elements. Each team defined a research question and created a functional prototype using sound, motion, and physical interaction. Our group developed a VR tank experience where the player uses custom control levers and receives motion feedback through a modified racing chair. The results were presented with a scientific poster including academic references.
My contributions
I created the complete 3D model of the tank, with an exterior based on the Sturmtiger and a fictional interior tailored for VR gameplay. I modeled the seat, dashboard, internal details, and the aiming device. I implemented the gameplay logic for the tank in Unreal Engine, including driving, aiming, and firing systems.
I connected the physical levers to in-game functions so the tank could be controlled in real time. I also built a VR aiming system where the player leans forward to look into a scope. A camera inside the cannon barrel feeds its view to a texture inside the cockpit, allowing immersive aiming without UI elements.
In addition, I connected all sound effects to the tank using MetaSounds, based on audio created by a teammate. I also helped modify the motion chair, which originally only affected the upper body. We added a custom footrest so that the whole body would follow the motion for a more complete experience.
Team contributions
One teammate built the physical control levers and created all sound assets. Another teammate created the environment, implemented the NPC tanks, and synced platform movement with in-game events.
This project consists
A single-player VR simulation where the user operates a WWII-inspired tank using physical controls and motion feedback. The cockpit was designed for immersive interaction, and all core systems were built to reflect real physical movement and sensory input.
